We have followed a principle of making passive recreation possible on these lands with the least amount of intrusion or disturbance of the natural habitats. Trails have been designed, rerouted, or reestablished with consideration for both their scenic quality and their utility. We have tried to steward, not develop, these properties. Maintenance of special habitat areas such as meadows, fields, old orchards, and a pine-barrens—all types of open land rare in Acton—has been performed at the lowest level deemed necessary to retain the unique character of these areas. Otherwise, management practices have been limited to keeping trails open while allowing the natural processes of decay, new growth, and succession to occur.
